You’re not sure which is worse. How cocky and oblivious they were when they were crushing it, or how sad they are now…nope, for sure this is worse.
With the shifts outside of their control (economy, niche, internal recruiting teams) and the things within their control they stubbornly refused to address (because what they were doing for SO long worked SO well), they have lost their “feel” for the biz. They don’t think anything works, and they don’t believe anything will ever get better, and by the way, AI is going to replace us and who cares because in a hundred years we’ll all be dead anyway! After a while, you avert your eyes and spend time with the rookies who have not grown so jaded. And you can do that, but let’s face it…
You love these people. You trained them, and your training and management was rewarded, and you thought they were “all good” and would stay that way…once they needed your help and because they were happy and willing and energized you were drawn to them. Well, time to make a decision: because they need you now more than ever…
